Plot

Kalki 2898 AD is a film based in the future in a dystopian society, a place full of vice and immorality and disasters. Such distant futures are typically flashbacks and flash-forwards in interstellar traveling adventures.

The film is based on Indian epic ‘Mahabharta’ in particular the events leading up to and continuing after the war.

In doing so, the goal is to show that the film is not only futuristic but it is also set in the past by blending ancient Indian mythology in a more contemporary way than most have ever imagined.

The Importance of the Mahabharata

The significance of ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ revolves around the Mahabharata. The events of the work in question take place after the well-known episode from the epic—the treacherous command of uttering, “Ashwatthama Hata: Kunjaraha,” where ‘Ashwatthama, the elephant is said to be dead.’

This leads to a chain of tragic events in which Ashwatthama uses a deadly weapon against the wife of Abhimanyu, who is pregnant, Shashirekha. Like a film trying to set a pronouncement so important in the Mahabharata makes the film so solid in the mythological aspect.

This is the frame of action upon which the plot proceeds rather unusual in Indian movies, where the story tries to depict the influence of such mythic happenings towards the civilization in the next few thousand years.
